This article offers an anthropological reading of rural schooling in Catalonia as a social institution, moving beyond its definition as a merely educational or administrative category. Drawing on a theoretical–interpretive approach grounded in a review of the literature, it articulates the notion of the total institution with the Maussian concept of the total social fact in order to conceptualize the rural school as a complex social institution. The analysis shows that, without equating it to classical models of total institutionalization, the rural school displays significant degrees of institutional integration and social centrality in contexts characterized by a limited presence of other institutions and public services. In such settings, the continuity between school time and community time, the multifunctional use of space, and the intensity of social relations shape processes of socialization marked by high social exposure and the production of locally situated norms and expectations. From the perspective of the total social fact, the rural school is understood as a site where educational, moral, symbolic, affective, and political dimensions converge, functioning as a key node linking the local community, territory, and the state.
