Group participation constitutes a relevant strategy for promoting active ageing and preventing unwanted loneliness among older adults, as it fosters social interaction, psychosocial well-being, and the strengthening of support networks. With the aim of understanding the experiences, perceptions, and perceived benefits of such participation for the quality of life of older women, an exploratory qualitative study was conducted. Five focus groups were carried out with a total of 53 older women. Data was collected using a semi-structured guide and analysed following Braun and Clarke’s (2006) thematic analysis approach. The results show that the main motivations for participating in the groups were related to the search for companionship, breaking away from everyday routines, and the desire to remain physically, emotionally, and cognitively active. The perceived benefits were linked to improvements in self-esteem, personal security, social relationships, and a sense of usefulness, with these findings coinciding with those reported in other studies. The results reinforce the importance of promoting group-based strategies with the active participation of women and from a gender perspective.
